Dissecting Images in Visual Communication

Communication is a vital part of understanding and exchanging information or news. The type of communication that I respond to most effectively is visual communication. I am able to pick up information and learn more efficiently when seeing the content directly in front of me. I become more connected with the information, which leads me to be more detail oriented and comprehend the deeper message the content is portraying. The most necessary tools for visual communication are images. Images can be understood by a wide variety of the public. They are able to grab my attention easily and I immediately drawn to them. There are many different types of images that can teach you a lesson and give you direction. Types of images that provide us visual graphics are logos. Companies create unique and recognizable logos to make their brand stand out from the rest. Three brands that portray strong visual communication are Adidas, Amazon, and NBC. Adidas is the “brand with three stripes”. Adidas has had the recognizable three striped logo since 1949. The company brands the idea of “earning your stripes”, by displaying the quote on their shirts and other forms of merchandise. The stripes on the logo are in the shape of a mountain, which indicates an athletic challenge that the person wearing it has accomplished or is working towards. Despite the minor changes the logo has had in the past 70 years, Adidas still stands out amongst the crowd and attracts new customers everyday. Another brand that has a creative logo that represents a deeper meaning is Amazon. The logo may look simple with the word “Amazon” in bold lettering with a yellow arrow underneath, but there is much more to it that meets the eye. The arrow represents the smile on the customers face while buying products from Amazon. The A’s act as eyes the the smile. The smile also acts like an arrow that starts at the letter A and ends at the letter Z. The arrow connecting these letters is a visual showing customers that Amazon sells products ranging form A to Z. The final logo I am analyzing is NBC. The rainbow logo stands out amongst other news channels and is distinct. The structure of the colors are peacock feathers in shape of a wing. The peacock is an animal that can not look backwards, so the company is spreading the message to look forward and do not look back. NBC created this logo during the beginning era of colored televisions, so their logo full of multiple shades of color would be fully appreciated. These three logos all have an extremely positive impact on the viewer and draw their eye in a positive direction. The use of the four principles of graphic design are also combined to make connections to other parts of the logo and to the viewer. Visual images and logos are strong forms of communication to relay information to the public and deciphering deeper messages hidden throughout the picture.
